Are your details on the dark web?

Staying safe online is no small feat. With hackers, scammers and criminals all hoping to steal our data and creep into our accounts, we all need to be both cautious and vigilant.

Did you know that there were a whopping 527 data breaches¹ here in Australia between January and June 2024? That’s a lot. An awful lot. In fact, it’s the highest amount of data breaches recorded in the last 3 and a half years.

Hackers that access a company’s customers’ personal data may then proceed to release those details onto the dark web, putting the individuals affected at greater risk of identity theft, fraud and scams.

So, what can you do about it? At Wisr, we know that having your personal data stolen can make you feel pretty helpless. To help you fight back, here are three simple steps you can take to be prepared and stay protected.

Step 1: Turn on BreachAlert

You’ll find BreachAlert on our app. Simply turn it on, and it’ll scan the dark web for the email address you used to set up your Wisr account.

BreachAlert will let you know if any of your data has been compromised, what personal details have been exposed and your recommended next steps.

Step 2: Change any compromised passwords

Your next step is to change the passwords on any affected accounts as soon as you can. This will help prevent hackers from logging into your accounts with these companies and making transactions.

Not sure what qualifies as a strong password? Read our quick guide on how to create secure passwords to make sure yours is nearly impossible to guess.

Step 3: Set up multi-factor authentication

We get it - it can be a bit annoying adding an extra step when you log into your accounts. However, ensuring a security code is sent to your phone or email address will add an extra layer of protection and prevent someone else from logging in.

Plus, it’ll give you a heads up if someone else is trying to log in from another device, allowing you to flag it with the relevant company and immediately change your password.

So, are you itching to take action and know if your details are on the dark web? Head to Wisr App and turn on BreachAlert to find out.
